Mallorca in October: ten years of climate data for road cyclists
On Mallorca, October is the month when the autumn training camps are running and the summer heat has gone. We worked out what the climate data says about it. Not one year but ten: daily values from 2016 to 2025, averaged into monthly figures.
How to read the numbers
Each base town has twelve monthly values: the daily mean temperature, rain days per month and the average daily maximum wind speed. A day counts as a rain day from 1 mm of precipitation. A region’s climate is the average of its base towns. Where the values come from, and why the rain-day counts are higher than those of official weather stations, is explained on the data page. The ranking between months and places is not affected, because every place is calculated the same way.
October on Mallorca
For the Mallorca region, October gives a daily mean of 20.2 °C, 8.2 rain days and an average daily maximum wind speed of 18.8 km/h, mainly from the NE.
Per base town, October looks like this:
- Port de Pollença: 20.4 °C, 9.6 rain days, 18.8 km/h from the NE.
- Alcúdia: 20.1 °C, 7.8 rain days, 19.9 km/h from the SW.
- Playa de Palma: 20.0 °C, 7.3 rain days, 17.7 km/h from the NE.
The temperature is practically the same in all three places. The difference is in the rain: the north around Port de Pollença lies at the foot of the Tramuntana and has just over two more rain days than the Bay of Palma.
Compared with September and November
September is warmer and wetter: 23.5 °C daily mean, 9.5 rain days, 18.3 km/h wind. November is noticeably cooler and windier: 15.8 °C, 9.1 rain days, 21.6 km/h, and the wind turns to the W.
That gives October the fewest rain days of the three autumn months, and its daily mean sits right in the middle of the range the score formula rates as ideal. In November the temperature is already at the lower edge of that range.
How the score works
The monthly score combines three factors into a value from 0 to 100: the daily mean temperature at 50%, rain days at 35% and wind at 15%. Full points go to temperatures between 15 and 26 °C, to no more than 2 rain days and to wind up to 15 km/h. Zero points below 5 and above 36 °C, from 14 rain days and from 35 km/h. In between, the share drops linearly. Each heat day, a day with a high above 32 °C, takes off 4 points. From 65 points, a month counts as suitable.
For Mallorca in October that means: 50 points from temperature, 16.9 from rain days, 12.1 from wind. Together 79.1, displayed as 79. September, with 1.2 heat days, reaches 70.8, November 74.3. All three months count as suitable, and October comes out on top.
Per base town: Playa de Palma 82.5, Alcúdia 79.4, Port de Pollença 75.0. The difference comes from the rain days alone.
The formula is calibrated against 18 target values from the cycling seasons, including the target that Mallorca is suitable in September and October. It meets 17 of the 18.
And the Canary Islands?
If you want to avoid rain entirely in October, look south. Costa Adeje on Tenerife has 22.8 °C in October, 1.8 rain days, 15.6 km/h wind and 1.5 heat days: score 93.6. Maspalomas on Gran Canaria has 24.0 °C, 3.4 rain days, 16.3 km/h and 3.5 heat days: score 80.9. Puerto de la Cruz in the north of Tenerife, on the other hand, shows that an island does not have just one climate: 22.9 °C, but 10.6 rain days and 3.2 heat days, score 62.1, which puts it below Port de Pollença.
So Mallorca in October is not a mistake but a compromise: 20 degrees, just under two rain days a week, and a shorter journey than to the Canary Islands. If you would rather not risk a rain day, Tenerife and Gran Canaria have drier base towns in the same month.
