Direct flights with a road bike from Zurich, Basel and Geneva: the airline rules
Taking a bike on a plane is no problem, as long as you know the airline’s rules beforehand. For each of our regions we checked who flies direct from Switzerland and what applies to the bike. The information is as of 19 September 2026. Anything we could not find is marked as not yet checked, never guessed.
Mallorca: SWISS and Edelweiss from Zurich, SWISS from Geneva
SWISS flies direct to Palma (PMI) from Zurich (LX2152, 06:55 to 08:50, daily) and from Geneva (LX2162, 07:05 to 08:45). According to the SWISS sports equipment page, the bike counts as sports equipment within the free baggage allowance of your travel class, as long as the number of bags and the weight stay within that allowance. The upper limit is 32 kg. The bike must be packed in a bike box or a similar container; SWISS hands out bike boxes free of charge in Zurich and Geneva. Neither the sports equipment page nor the excess baggage or FAQ pages give a price for the bike. If you want to know the cost, check during booking.
Edelweiss flies Zurich–Palma all year round: ten times a week in October 2026, three to four times in January 2027, eleven to twelve times in April 2027. Flight time is 1 h 35 min. Its bike rule is the clearest of the lot: the first piece of sports equipment in the Normal category, up to 23 kg including packing, travels free of charge, maximum size 275 cm. This does not apply to the Light Fare. A cardboard bike box is available at check-in in Switzerland for CHF 25.
Girona: SWISS and Vueling from Zurich to Barcelona
Girona has its own airport (GRO), but no airline flies there direct from Switzerland, or at least we found no such flight. The route goes via Barcelona (BCN). SWISS flies direct from Zurich daily (LX1952, 07:10 to 08:50), and the bike rule is the same as above: 32 kg, in a bike box, no price on the page.
Vueling flies Zurich–Barcelona direct in about 1 h 50 min. The bike counts as special baggage and costs 45 to 65 EUR online and 55 to 75 EUR at the airport, per flight and passenger. Vueling gives a range rather than a single figure, so our data does not contain one either. The item may weigh up to 32 kg and be no longer than 2.70 m, and the bike must travel dismantled in a box or bag.
Tenerife and Gran Canaria: Edelweiss from Zurich
To the Canary Islands, Edelweiss flies from Zurich all year round to Tenerife South (TFS) and Gran Canaria (LPA), seven to twelve flights a week each. SWISS sells the same flights as a codeshare (LX8214, LX8200, operated by WK), so we do not list it as a second airline. The Edelweiss bike rule applies: first piece of sports equipment up to 23 kg free except on the Light Fare, 275 cm, cardboard bike box CHF 25.
easyJet carries the bike as large sports equipment up to 32 kg, from Switzerland for CHF 68 online and CHF 74 at the airport per flight (fees, checked on 26 September 2026). A direct flight from Geneva to Tenerife South only appeared on the easyJet website as a price list without a timetable, so it is not in our data.
Basel: easyJet to the Costa Blanca
Update of 26 September 2026, since the Costa Blanca was added: from Basel (BSL), easyJet flies direct to Alicante (ALC) and Valencia (VLC), the two airports of the Costa Blanca. The easyJet route network lists Basel as a connection for both, and the EuroAirport lists Alicante and Valencia as destinations served. easyJet flies the same routes from Geneva. To Mallorca, Girona and the Canary Islands we still found no direct flight from Basel: the EuroAirport lists Palma and Barcelona without naming an airline, and no timetable was available. So we do not say there is no direct flight there, only that we did not find one. The direct flight filter shows Zurich for all base towns, Geneva for Mallorca and the Costa Blanca, and Basel for the three base towns on the Costa Blanca.
Also not found and not recorded: Vueling from Zurich or Geneva to Palma and from Geneva to Barcelona (only as city pairs, without a timetable), SWISS Geneva–Barcelona (without a timetable), and Eurowings, Ryanair, Wizz, Helvetic, Chair, Air Europa and Iberia Express.
What this means for planning
Four rules cover everything we found:
- SWISS: 32 kg, bike box or cardboard box, within the free baggage allowance; no price given on the page.
- Edelweiss: 23 kg including packaging, 275 cm, first piece of sports equipment free except on the Light Fare, cardboard bike box CHF 25.
- Vueling: 32 kg, 2.70 m, dismantled in a box or bag, 45 to 65 EUR online, 55 to 75 EUR at the airport.
- easyJet: 32 kg as large sports equipment, CHF 68 online, CHF 74 at the airport.
The 23 kg at Edelweiss includes the packaging. A hard case alone weighs several kilograms, so factor that in.
